While the College Park Fire Department is always looking for brave men and women to dedicate themselves to the field of fire service, there are a few specifics that cannot be looked over. Here all forms, job descriptions, requirments and the like can be found.

Job Description
Firefighter II/AEMT/GA Paramedic

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:
Performs firefighting, rescue and fire prevention activities; assist in the care and upkeep of fire stations and equipment; does related work as required. Provide emergency medical care as outlined in EMT-I/AEMT/ PARAMEDIC certification scope of practice.

SPECIFIC DUTIES:
Responds with fire engine or Rescue unit to medical emergencies, fires, connects hose to hydrants, extends attack lines, directs fire streams, uses fire extinguishers, wears self-contained breathing apparatus, sets up and operates master stream appliances and raises and climbs ladders. Administers life support including controlling hemorrhage, performing cardiac emergency care, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, providing airway maintenance, oxygen inhalation, external defibrillation treatment and splinting. Performs rescue operations by use of the hydraulic rescue tools. Performs all related work as required.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Must be able to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Performs such activities as climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling in confined spaces, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, and feeling. Able to work in a diverse environment and community.

EDUCATION AND EXPEIRENCE
High school diploma or equivalent (GED). Post high school education a plus. Minimum three (3) years of experience. Must be a U.S. citizen or have such appropriate documentation from U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Services. Must be 21 years of age and possess a valid Georgia driver’s license. Certifications: licensed as a Georgia EMT-I/AEMT/Paramedic is preferred.

SPECIAL REQUIRMENTS
A physical Agility Evaluation, Written Examination (passing score of 70 or higher), Background Investigation (State and National) Drug Screen, NFPA 1582 Compliant Medical Examination and an oral Interview. Candidates offered employment will be on a twelve (12) month probationary period.

PREFERED QUALIFICATIONS
Fire Service Professional Qualifications System (Pro-Board) certifications as a minimum; Firefighter I; Hazardous Materials-Operations; State of Georgia issue EMT/Paramedic licensure; Current BCLS/ACLS certification; Current CPR certification; valid driver license with acceptable driving record.

The Hiring Process

1. Complete application online or pick up an application in person at Human Resources located in City Hall College Park City Hall 3667 Main St. College Park, GA 30337

2. Candidate must be 21 years of age at the time of completing the application

3. Physical Agility Test

• All tasks will be demonstrated at the time of the test and are available online. Admission to this test is conditioned on the candidate's physician signing a form releasing the City from liability and all other documents being completed. This is a time-sensitive 1 day pass or fail test but the number of testing days varies based on the number of applicants tested.

4. Written examination administered.

• The written examination consists of a multiple-choice aptitude test that may include measures of mechanical ability, ability to comprehend written materials and the ability to interpret a report
• Top scoring applicants shall progress to the oral interview.
• This test is administered in 1 day and results should be received within 2 to 3 weeks.

5. Oral interview(s) conducted.

• Formal business interview

6. Chief’s interview conducted.

• One on one interview with Fire Department Chief.

7. Background check administered.

• This check involves reports from law enforcement agencies, Department of Motor Vehicles 7 years, past and present employers, personal references, etc.
• This process takes 2 weeks depending on number of applicants and findings.
• Applicants are fingerprinted
• The electronic process takes 1-3 days for results to arrive.

8. Conditional job offer

• Based on their final ranking after the physical ability exam, written exam, oral interview and chief’s interview.

9. Medical exam/drug screening is conducted with the city Doctor

10. Job offer is made to the applicants pending all of the above is completed and in order

11. City Employee orientation

• Conducted by Human Resources to explain benefits and salary.

12. Fire Academy

• 12-14 weeks Fire Training and 7-9 months of A-EMT school. Must pass both.

13. Emergency Medical Technician

• Advanced Emergency Medical Technician certification must be obtained within 90 days of successful completion of an assigned State of Georgia approved EMT program.

- Candidates shall have no more than (3) three opportunities to successfully pass the National Registry Exam within a 90 day period. The 90 day period shall begin the following day after completion of the assigned EMT class.

14. Probationary period

• One year and may be extended.

The Physical Agility Test

1. Candidate must have a completed Physical Agility Test Waiver.
2. Vitals will be taken before and after. The candidate shall be provided with gloves, helmet, and a 50 lb weighted vest to be worn during the entire test. Candidate shall be dressed in appropriate clothing with long pants and sneakers. Sweat pants are acceptable
3. The candidate shall wear gloves, helmet, and a 50 lb. vest during the entire test.
4. The candidate may not run during the test.
5. Time will begin at the starting of the first exercise and shall stop when the candidate completes the last exercise. (The candidate may pause during the test but time will continue to expire.)
6. The candidate may ask that instructions for all or any single exercise be read again but time will continue to expire if the test has already begun.
7. The candidate must complete the entire test in seven minutes or less.

Exercise Instructions

1. Stair Climb - The candidate, given Simulated High Rise Pack 100-foot section of 1¾ inch diameter hose and a multi-story structure or flight of stairs, shall carry the hose section down a flight of stairs to the bottom floor and then return to the starting point 3 times with the hose. The candidate must use each step while climbing or descending the stairway. If a step is missed 3 seconds will be taken away for every step missed. No rail holding is permitted unless the candidate loses their balance.

1. Ventilation Exercise - Given a fire department sledge hammer and standing on level ground with a target (such as a large tire etc.) placed on the ground in front of them, the candidate must strike the target with the sledge hammer 25 times. The hammer must be brought completely over the shoulder to simulate a chopping motion as if cutting a ventilation hole.

1. Hose Advance - The candidate, given a dry 100-foot 3 inch hoseline shall pick up the end of the hose and advance the hoseline for a distance of 100 feet. After reaching the destination end, the candidate must turn and drag the remainder of the hose beyond the mark on the ground and lay the hose on the ground.

1. Rescue Drag - The candidate, given a 165-pound dummy on a level surface, shall drag the dummy a distance of 50 feet.

1. Ladder Extension - The candidate, given a 24-foot aluminum extension ladder in a securely supported vertical position, must completely extend the fly section (top section) of the ladder 2 times. The candidate must then lower the fly section in a controlled fashion to the starting position.

1. Ladder Removal/Replacement - The candidate, given a 14-foot roof ladder placed in a horizontal position at a height of 5 feet and with the ladder rungs in a vertical position, shall lift the entire ladder from its support and place it on the ground then pick the entire ladder up and return it to its original position 2 times.

1. Pipe Crawl – The candidate is required to crawl through a 20ft pipe head first. The time stops when the candidate comes to their feet outside the pipe.

Any discrepancies or issues regarding the test must be taken to the Lead Evaluator or Proctor.
