NECESSARY INFO FOR NEW BUSINESSES ESTABLISHED IN THE CITY OF COLLEGE PARK

If you are a prospective business owner in the City of College Park, please contact the Fire Marshal’s Office before making any significant investments.

Fire and Life Safety Code requirements vary depending on several factors such as occupancy type; occupant load; building size; construction type; number of exits; travel distance to exits; and building or space location relative to other occupancy types.

WHAT IS THE CURRENT OR LAST OCCUPANCY CLASSIFICATION FOR MY LOCATION?

Changes of occupancy classification require the building to meet new code requirements for the new occupancy as required by state law.

It may require significant expense to achieve compliance.

It is important to know that some occupancy types have restrictions on exactly where they can be located and, in some cases, may not be allowable in multi-tenant buildings.

AM I PERFORMING ANY RENOVATIONS TO THE BUILDING OR SPACE?

Renovations include paint and carpet as well as furnishings. Any renovations must be done in conformance with current code requirements. Additionally, the Georgia Accessibility Code requires any space or building being renovated to comply with ADA accessibility requirements for persons with disabilities.

ALL COMMERCIAL LOCATIONS MUST HAVE THE FOLLOWING ITEMS:

  • Working and current fire extinguisher (exact type, size, and number is dependent on occupancy type and square footage)
  • Working smoke alarms/detectors (exact number is dependent of occupancy type and square footage)
  • Fully operational exit facilities (occupant loads of more than 50 people require more than 1 exit. Some occupancy types require panic hardware for the exit doors.)

Some occupancy types may require additional fire protection equipment. Examples of these occupancy types are daycares, places of public assembly, schools, restaurants and commercial cooking operations, industrial occupancies, etc.

EXAMPLES OF ADDITIONAL FIRE PROTECTION EQUIPMENT INCLUDE:

  • Automatic Fire Sprinkler Systems
  • Fire Alarm Systems
  • Grease Exhaust Hoods with Fire Suppression Systems
  • Panic hardware on exit doors

You must also check with the city’s zoning official and building official for any additional requirements.

The above listed items may not be all-inclusive as requirements vary depending on occupancy type, building construction type and square footage, etc.

All new businesses in the City of College Park are required to undergo a Fire Safety Inspection prior to the issuance of a business license.
