Volunteers team up to build College Park Community Playground on Camp Creek Parkway

Nearly 200 volunteers from Target, Favor House Inc, and the City of College Park, along with organizers from KaBOOM! and residents of the College Park community teamed up to build a new community playground Friday, Sept. 8 at Central Park Apartments on Camp Creek Parkway.

Designed in July when children from the neighborhood put crayons to paper to draw their dream playground, the new play space includes state of the art equipment. The new playground will bring more than 600 kids in College Park one step closer to having the childhood they deserve.

“This is one of the most important community projects for our residents,” said Joe Carn, College Park’s Ward II Councilman.  Carn is a strong advocate of youth, education and recreation.  He is truly proud to help bring the playground to fruition.  “Now young people in our apartments can walk to a safe play area and parents can use the walking trail and picnic tables anytime,” he added.

College Park continues to support kid-friendly landscapes; today’s build is the third KaBOOM! playground constructed in within the last 15 months.  Through the dedicated vision of KaBOOM!, College Park installed playgrounds at the Bill Badgett Stadium (May 2016) and at the Tracey Wyatt Recreation Complex (July 2016).

Green spaces and safe play structures where children and families can enjoy and spend time together have always been a priority in College Park.  The Georgia Favor House plays an important role in the community as well, concentrating on health, wellness and exercise through its youth track and field program.

“The Georgia Favor House has always been invested in building our communities through play, healthy living and education,” said Favor House Founder Subrenia Willis.  The organization supplied numerous volunteers for the Bill Badgett Stadium’s playground build in May of 2016, and continues to broaden its scope, developing programs to address children's needs.  “We’re making a difference each day,” Willis added.

Both the City of College Park and Georgia Favor House believe playing outdoors is an important part of every child’s healthy development.  The creation of this new playground will expand College Park’s efforts to allow thousands of children to play safely and be active in their community.

As part of the construction, volunteers assembled the playground from start to finish in less than six hours. They mixed and poured thousands of pounds of concrete and moved enough safety surfacing to cover more than nine NBA-sized basketball courts.

Target supports KaBOOM! in promoting and protecting a child’s right to active play at home, at school and in the community. Partnering with KaBOOM! is part of Target’s ongoing efforts to help make wellness more affordable, accessible and inspirational for its team members, guests and communities. Through this partnership, more children will have the joyful childhood they deserve.
